Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. I am taking medication to lower my blood pressure and have agreed to manage my diabetes through diet and exercise.

I have started the Xpert Health online course having completed the 1st session.

My question is should I be following a low carb diet or a low fat diet or a combination of both.

Hi

Thank you for your question, it sounds like you are ready to make some positive changes to your diet :).

If you have started our online course then you will also have access to a health coach, so please make use of their expertise to help you along the way.

But to answer your question, X-PERT offers different dietary approaches to choose from because we are not all the same and we all have different needs.

So the answer is to have a look at all the options and see which one appeals to you the most and which you think you could adopt over the long term. Things to be mindful of are we all react differently to fats and carbs, so you would need to experiment until you see your health improving and losing weight if this is a goal. Also, note that carbohydrate has the biggest impact on your blood glucose (BG) so you might want to start lower with your carb portions and see what happens to your BG.

Hope this helps

Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your reply. It really does help.

I think i will start a low carb diet and see how it goes.

If I have read the literature correctly it suggest I don't need to consider low fat options particularly in relation to dairy products. i.e. butter, full fat milk and full fat natural yogurt, is that correct.

As you suggest if I have any other specific questions I will put them to my health coach, I just want to start my diet properly as soon as possible.

Kind regards Nigel

Hi Nigel

It's a pleasure and sounds like a good plan 🙂

Yes about the dairy, this is because generally low-fat usually means added/hidden sugars.

Just means your portion sizes might be smaller, but will be healthier.

Good luck and enjoy experimenting

Paul
