Are from certain black and minority ethnic (BAME) groups
Have a family history of diabetes
Have impaired glucose regulation
Carry excess body weight (especially around the waist)
Have low activity levels (exercising less than 3 times a week)
Eat a diet that contains too much refined carbohydrate and processed food
Have high blood pressure (greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg)
Are older than 40 (although it is becoming more common in younger people)
Developed diabetes during a previous pregnancy
Gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
Have been diagnosed with the metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome
