Hello folks. After being ill for the past 3 months I have found it difficult to get back to focusing. Can you offer any advice for me to get motivated again please.
Thank you.
Rosannah
Hi Rosannah,
Please accept my apologies for the delayed response, we are working at a reduced capacity during the current pandemic and unfortunately the notification of your message was not picked up. If you are still looking for some hints about how to boost your motivation, please see the below as a possible starter, or as a base for discussion.
Motivation can be difficult at the best of times, but I can imagine that after a period of being unwell you would have felt particularly drained and probably stressed. Generally speaking we would encourage people to set a goal to try and help encourage them to work towards something. It does not have to be a big one, as even a small change may help to kick start you.
Working through the X-PERT five step goal setting model* can help you set a goal that is meaningful to you, and can help you to consider what barriers there may be to achieving that goal so you can plan how you might reduce or avoid them. These are key steps, as people often try something without considering how it fits into their lifestyle, feelings, beliefs and values. It is also important to make your own decisions about what you would like to try, as it is rare for suggestions made by other people to be the right fit for us. If you would like to discuss any possible options, so you can make an informed choice, then let me know!
It may also help to discuss this situation with a supportive friend or family member, who may be able to provide the encouragement needed. Once you have shared a goal with someone else that can also give you an extra push to want to work towards it!
Our previous blog on motivation might also be something that can help. It can be found here: https://www.xperthealth.org.uk/x-pert-blogs/it-takes-a-little-motivation/
Sorry again for the delayed response, and I hope you are well.
Sean
* this is explained in the X-PERT Diabetes Handbook, but if you do not have access to one then let me know and I can cover the basics
Rosannah,
how are you doing now with your motivation?
I have only just joined the xperthealth community, read your post and wondered how you were doing?
From past experience when you start something like a diet or exercise plan, enthusiasm is heigh but often wains as time passed and you can easily fall back into your old routine. Motivation is hard to maintain and even harder to regain so I totally get where your coming from.
So you have a friend either in real life or online who you can consider in... share things with, make small goals with, encourage each other? I would think would encourage your motivation with a friendly bit of competitive spirit... and you would know that you're not going through this on your own.
