I hope you can help me with this. I was wondering just how much (percentage) of visceral fat should remain to protect the organs.
Hi
Thanks for your question regarding visceral fat and how much is enough to protect your organs. To start with we have two types of fat 1) subcutaneous fat (beneath the skin) and 2) visceral fat (around organs). Both of these will provide protection.
The aim is to fall within an overall healthy body fat percentage/body mass index range or waist to height ratio (these can be found on the back page of our patient handbook). Some machines do provide an estimate of your visceral fat too but this depends on which model you use.
It is normal to have some visceral fat, but too much can cause issues such as insulin resistance and inflammation. If your waist measurement falls within the normal range then this is probably enough to be healthy and allow some protection between the organs.
Hope this answers your question, if you need any more help then please ask.
Paul
Thank you that answers my question.
