NICE Guidelines for Type 2 Diabetes Management Urgently Need Updating
X-PERT Health, alongside other leading health organisations, is calling for an urgent update to NICE’s NG28 guidelines on managing type 2 diabetes in adults. Despite significant advancements in research, NICE has not revised its dietary recommendations since 2009. This outdated guidance fails to acknowledge the role of flexible dietary approaches — and does not recognise remission as a viable treatment goal.
The lack of alignment with national and international guidelines creates confusion among healthcare professionals and limits patient choice. While NICE committed in 2019 to reviewing new evidence, no action has been taken, even after the publication of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition report in 2021, which supports the safety and effectiveness of low-carb diets.
What Action is X-PERT Health Taking?
X-PERT Health, alongside the British Dietetic Association and Public Health Collaboration, has sent an open letter to NICE urging them to update NG28. We are advocating for:
✅ Recognition of type 2 diabetes remission as a valid treatment goal
✅ Inclusion of flexible, evidence-based dietary options such as low-carb and Mediterranean diets
✅ Alignment with other international guidelines to ensure consistency and better patient care
Now is the time for NICE to act!
