The X-PERT Way

Helping people make more informed choices to self manage their condition

Our Story

X-PERT Health began in 2000 with a simple but important goal: to help people with diabetes better understand their condition and feel equipped to manage their own health.

The educate, not medicate approach was developed and tested through doctoral research at the University of Leeds, before X-PERT Health was founded in 2008.

People living with diabetes spend only a small proportion of each year with healthcare professionals, meaning that the vast majority of day-to-day diabetes management is in their own hands. X-PERT Health was developed in response to the need for people to have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed decisions about their health.

From the outset, the programme was shaped by the experiences and needs of people living with diabetes. Focus groups explored what people wanted to understand about their condition and how they wanted to learn, helping to establish X-PERT Health’s discovery-learning approach.

That principle remains at the heart of X-PERT Health today: empowering people through education to understand their health and make informed choices.

Meeting actual needs

It became clear that verbal information provided in a clinical setting was not helping people manage their condition on a day-to-day basis. To challenge this approach, group education sessions and educational visual aids were developed and piloted.

The success of these sessions led to the creation of the very first X-PERT Programme X-PERT Diabetes’.

Focused on actual needs, the programme offered participants a weekly 2.5 hour session for six weeks. This prevented information overload, supported regular review and reinforcement and enabled participants to obtain the confidence to identity and set goals to develop self-management skills.

The effectiveness of the programmes were evaluated with a clinical trial.

Today, we offer a range of evidence-based education and behaviour change programmes, delivered through flexible formats including face-to-face group sessions, remote learning, and digital solutions. This enables us to support more people, in more locations, and in ways that fit around their lifestyles.

Our portfolio now includes First Steps, an introductory programme designed to help individuals begin their health improvement journey, specialist Insulin education, and our Weight & Wellbeing programme, which supports sustainable weight management through the latest evidence-based approaches.

Across all our programmes, we remain committed to empowering people with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills they need to take control of their health and achieve lasting positive outcomes.
