Dr Trudi Deakin

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Trudi is Chief Executive of X-PERT Health and specialises in the research, development, implementation and audit of structured education for the public and healthcare professionals internationally. Trudi’s first degree in Nutrition and Dietetics was obtained in 1993, followed by a teaching qualification in 1998 and a doctorate in diabetes, behaviour change and self-management education in 2004.

As the founder X-PERT Health and the author of the portfolio of X-PERT Programmes, Trudi has trained over 1,500 healthcare professionals to become X-PERT Educators, which has permitted the delivery of structured education to over 250,000 people at risk of, or diagnosed with, diabetes. She has published widely and has demonstrated that implementation of the X-PERT Programme is a cost saving strategy that not only results in statistically significant improvements in all clinical and quality of life indicators but also reduces the requirement for prescribed medication.  The first 10 years of X-PERT Health

Her ambition is to further develop professional and patient education systems that increase competences to enable people to successfully prevent or manage long-term health conditions, improving health and well-being, and saving healthcare costs. A visiting fellow at the University of Hertfordshire and a founding member and trustee of the Public Health Collaboration enables the continuation of research and development in nutritional education and the ability to raise awareness of evidence-based lifestyle approaches for optimal health.

Sean started working for X-PERT Health as a researcher and trainer in public health in September 2016, and is leading the development of X-PERT Heart; a programme designed to help people with, or at risk of, cardiovascular disease. Before starting at X-PERT Sean was a part-time lecturer in physiology and biomechanics at Leeds Beckett University, where he also completed his PhD looking at cardiometabolic health in young people. Sean has undergraduate and master’s degrees in sports science from Kingston University and Loughborough University respectively; and it was through completing these degrees that his keen interest in the prevention and management of chronic disease was developed.

Matthew Whitaker, Researcher & Trainer in Public Health

Matt's fascination with nutrition and its impact on health began in 2010 when he self-educated himself around the basics to aid his own weight loss journey where he totalled 6 ½ stone loss in excess weight. After experiencing the ‘feel good’ sensation that came with achieving his health related goal he knew he wanted to pursue a career based on helping others achieve their goals.

Matt studied Nutrition, Health & Lifestyles (BSc) at Sheffield Hallam University. Whilst undertaking his undergraduate degree he specialised more in performance nutrition, working with a gym, several individual personal trainers and directly with athletes. This work led Matt into his postgraduate degree in Sport & Exercise Nutrition (MSc) at Loughborough University. Whilst completing his MSc Matt carried on applied work, primarily in cricket and football. Whilst sports nutrition is clearly an area of interest to Matt his passion still remains in public health and helping others achieve their goals. Matt is currently working in the ongoing expansion of X-PERT Diabetes in addition to training future educators delivering the programmes. Lastly he has taken the lead in the development of our new programme, X-PERT Weight.

Nina Evans, Researcher & Trainer in Public Health

Nina joined the X-PERT Health team in April 2018. She gained particular interest in the psychology of eating and the impact of the food environment after studying an undergraduate of Psychology at the University of Westminster. After travelling for a couple of years and developing her own knowledge in nutrition and health she completed a MSc in Nutrition at the University of Leeds. Whilst completing her studies and afterwards she volunteered with a community outreach programme delivering cookery skills and educating the public about food and nutrition. This further developed her passion in public health and adult education which brought her to the role of Researcher and Trainer with X-PERT Health.

Paul Hollinrake, Researcher & Trainer in Public Health

Paul has enjoyed a fulfilling career in the health and wellness industry spanning over 20 years. During this time, he has worked as a personal trainer alongside lecturing for both the Open University and the University of Central Lancashire, delivering undergraduate courses in sports science and health and personal training.

Paul has a real passion for health, exercise and nutrition and believes that keeping up to date with current research is vital. He has studied Exercise and Health Science (BSc Hons) at the University of Salford as well as postgraduate qualifications in Strength and Conditioning (MSc) from the University of Bolton, teacher training (Cert. Education.) at the University of Central Lancashire and Sport and Exercise Nutrition (PG. Diploma) with the International Olympic Committee, Switzerland. Paul is registered with the British Dietetic Association as an Associate Sport and Exercise Nutritionist and believes in a holistic approach to helping people achieve their personal health goals.

She recently relocated back to her home county of West Yorkshire after many years living in London and the south of England. Kate is responsible for the finances of the organisation and joined the X-PERT Team in April 2017.

PUBLIC HEALTH COLLABORATION: THINK TANK

In 2015 Dr Trudi Deakin became a founding member and trustee of a Public Health Collaboration UK group, which was established to encourage changes to the current NHS healthy eating guidance.

The initial purpose is to focus on the root cause of the deteriorating public health problem by improving the healthy eating and weight loss guidelines given by the NHS, namely the Eatwell Plate and simple calorie restriction. Alongside this the plan of action is to notify the government of their recommendations with the help of their incredibly influential Advisory Board and Patrons. The collaboration's first report was published in June 2016 and represented their findings and dietary advice for those living with diabetes, which were informed to the government in order to improve our nation's health. This process will be repeated with other pressing health issues concerning the UK every 3 months until improvements are made.
