Courses

X-PERT Health delivers 3 programmes: X-PERT Prevention of Diabetes (X-POD), X-PERT Diabetes and X-PERT Insulin. All programmes offer 15 hours of group education which is delivered by trained educators. In order to ensure people understand their condition and to prevent information overload the 15 hours is split into bite-sized chunks of weekly 2½ hour sessions over 6 weeks and covers a different topic each week.

ALL COURSES ARE FREE AND USUALLY DELIVERED THROUGH THE NHS.  Whether you have had diabetes for 20 years or whether you have been newly diagnosed, our courses are for you.

The six week group education programmes do not focus on prescription, dictation and reprimand; instead, they offer a fun way of learning about and understanding diabetes, using visual aids and discovery learning and enabling individuals to make their own informed decisions. In addition to the training a comprehensive handbook will be given to supplement the programme and there is also the opportunity to attend a follow-up refresher session within 18 months of the course.

1) X-PERT Prevention of Diabetes Course (X-POD)
Around 1 in 7 adults may have blood glucose levels above the normal range, but not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. If you are one of these people and are left untreated you may go on to develop diabetes. The good news is that attending an intensive lifestyle change programme can prevent Type 2 diabetes. An overview of the X-POD Programme can be found here.

Are You At Risk? You have a higher risk for diabetes if you:

  • are from certain black and minority ethnic (BAME) groups
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • have Impaired glucose regulation
  • carry excess body weight (especially around the waist)
  • have low activity levels (exercising less than 3 times a week)
  • eat a diet that contains too much refined carbohydrate and processed food
  • have high blood pressure (greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg)
  • are older than 40 (although it is becoming more common in younger people)
  • developed diabetes during a previous pregnancy
  • gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
  • have been diagnosed with the metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome

Identifying and assessing people at risk of diabetes is part of the NHS Health Check programme. This programme is being rolled out throughout England to ensure everyone aged 40–74 who has not been diagnosed with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke or kidney disease is offered an initial risk assessment. If they are at increased risk of diabetes they should be offered a place on a diabetes prevention programme.
